    SCRIPT:

Hi, my name is [Name] and I am a New York State resident. I am calling to urge your office to support the passage and full funding of Statewide Right to Counsel legislation (A1493-Joyner/S2721-May) in the fiscal year 2024 budget.

Statewide Right to Counsel would guarantee ALL tenants across New York State the Right to Counsel when facing an eviction. Right to Counsel is proven to stop evictions and will keep New Yorkers in their homes. Here in New York, nearly all landlords across the state have lawyers, while the vast majority of tenants do not, which creates an imbalance of power in the courts that largely favors landlords. New York tenants need Right to Counsel, so they can fight evictions and remain safe and securely housed!

We know the Assembly is considering RTC in the budget--but the language is not strong enough and it doesn't cover NYC tenants. We need your leadership in pushing for a bill that makes RTC a right and covers ALL tenants.

[Explain why this bill is personally important to you]

Will your office support the passage of this bill in the fiscal year 2024 budget

  • Click to call Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins: 518-455-2585 (if you don't reach someone, you can try the District Office: (914) 423-4031 or this number: 518-455-2715).

We know the Senate did not include Right to Counsel in your One House budget. The Assembly did include RTC language, but it's not strong enough and it doesn't cover NYC tenants. We are counting on your leadership in ensuring the Senate can work with the Assembly to push for a bill in the final budget that makes RTC a right and covers ALL tenants.

We were so encouraged to see your office's continuing support for funding for eviction legal defense outside of New York City. But New York State tenants need guaranteed and fully funded representation in the courts. The Assembly included RTC in its One House budget, but the language is not strong enough and it doesn't cover NYC tenants. We need your leadership in ensuring a bill in the final budget that makes RTC a right and covers ALL tenants.
