The tenant movement is powerful! In one week, we made 500 calls and sent 547 emails to the Chief Judges and to Cuomo demanding that they extend the eviction moratorium and keep the courts closed!
We won a partial victory: The Universal Eviction Moratorium is STILL IN EFFECT! No evictions, for anyone, for any reason, across NY State.
The rules around the moratorium keep changing. See our FAQs (here and here) about the moratorium and make sure to know your rights!
But we can't stop now. While the moratorium was extended and the courts are mostly still physically closed, the extension isn't enough and the courts are letting landlords file new eviction cases! That's not right.
On Monday, hundreds of New Yorkers protested in front of housing courts across the state, from Brooklyn to Buffalo, to say we demand an Eviction Free NY! We marched, sang, took the streets, issued indictments and covered the sidewalks with our demands! See coverage in the New York Times and Patch! If you missed it, you can check out the livestream video from 5 simultaneous actions!
And, check out and share this great op-ed from our RTC bill sponsors, Council Members Mark Levine and Vanessa Gibson, supporting our demand to ensure everyone has Right to Counsel!
